20 kilometers off the cost of Nagasaki is an island called Gunkanjima. It used to be a coal mine. As many buildings were built up on such a small island, the island started to look like a battleship, thus the name Gunkanjima a.k.a Battleship Island. In the mid 1970s, the mine was closed and all of the residents had to leave the island because all of the workers on that island were workers. The island was abandoned. Due to weathering caused by wind, rain, and typhoons, the buildings became unstable and was closed to the public until 2009. There are many boat tours to Gunkanjima. The trips are about 3-4 hours total including the ride. You can`t visit their on your own, the government says you can only go as part of a tour.
