One of the most interesting things about going to a new country is to experience their culture. There is no better way to experience a country`s culture than to eat their food. So here is a general guide to the delicious kinds of Japanese food!
JAPANESE BREAD - Japanese bread is some of the best in the world. There are many bakeries all over Japan. Try a few! You won`t regret it.
RICE BOWLS (DONBURI) - There are many types of donburis in Japan. Seafood bowl/ pork bowl/ beef bowl/ just to name a few. The Katsu-don and Oyako-don are very popular. Katsu is deep fried pork, and the oyako-don is chicken. Oyako means family in Japan. They call it oyako-don because they use chicken and eggs to make the dish. I don`t know if that`s cute or barbaric.
TEMPURA - Tempura is a fairly well known dish in Japan. It`s deep fried everything. You eat it with a sweet soy-based sauce, and is avaiable to eat at many restaurants.
RAMEN - Another popular dish in Japan. You can choose from several different kinds of soup, including pork broth soup, miso soup, or soy sauce. So delicious! Some creative ramen shops have been coming out with new flavors like tomato ramen. Mmmmm!
UDON - Udon is a type of wheat noodle. Usually white and pretty thick. Another delicious choice to try. Udon is a common noodle in Japan and is available at most restaurants. Commonly, the udon is served both hot and cold, and comes with some fish broth soup.
SOBA - Called buckwheat in English, is a greyish noodle. It`s often eaten in the summer topped with chives and seaweed. And is also a common dish Japanese people eat to celebrate the New Year.
YAKINIKU - Sit down with your friends and family and cook some beef right at your table! In western countries, we often only eat steak, but in Japan, they eat almost all parts of the cow. I know it can sound unappetizing but it`s actually pretty good. Be an adventurer and try some beef tongue or parts of the intestine!
TAKOYAKI - octopus balls topped with takoyaki sauce, seaweed, and bonito flakes! Delicious!
YAKITORI - different types of chicken skewers. Also a delicious choice.
JAPANESES STYLE SPAGHETTI - Japanese people are very innovative and they come up with new menu items all the time. Some Japanese style spaghetti restaurants are very popular in Japan. They taste very different from Italian pasta, so you have to go in with an open mind. Some types are mushroom pasta, cod roe pasta, fermented soy bean pasta, squid ink pasta and more.
JAPANESE STYLE CURRY - tastes a little different from Indian curry. But still very delicious. It`s often eaten with rice, and not naan.
SHABU SHABU - A type of hot pot which you cook vegetables and meat usually in water, and eat it with sesame seed sauce or ponzu sauce. (ponzu sauce is a sour/citric soy-based sauce)
HOT POTS- These are usually eaten in households but can be eaten in restaurants as well. There are so many types of hot pots. Some of them are crab hot pot/ boar hot pot/ tripe hot pot / duck hot pot. Each hot pot goes good with a specific kind of soup, so it can be very tasty.
SUSHI - I think everyone knows what sushi is, so I will not explain it
CAKES - The cake stores in Japan are very delicious too. If you`re a sweet tooth, check it out.
